Harmonizing Theologians: Dante’s Paradiso Canto X

Dante sees the theologians in the Paradiso as harmonizers of the collision at the center of the cross – orchestrating the chaos of the cosmos into music and dance. In an image not usually associated with the work of theology, in lines 79ff we read

“…they stood like dancers still caught in the pleasure of the last round, who pause in place and listen till they have caught the beat of the new measure.”
