In
the third and final part of this series on the Trinity recorded in 1994 , Gil
Bailie examines what St. Paul alludes to in his phrase, "now I live, yet not I; but Christ lives in me". Reflecting an 'interdividual' rather than individualistic understanding of human personality and person-hood, we find what Camille Paglia, Susan Sontag, Mary McCarthy, Simone de Beauvoir and Simone Weil all share in their variously valenced desires. We are invited to see the phenomena of unwanted influence, personal interfusion, demon possession and hysteria within the spectrum of the mimetic nature of human being.
At the end Gil wonders what all this could possibly have to do with the Trinity... in the Christian understanding of human beings made in the image of their trinitarian creator. At the heart of the Trinity is a relationship of love - the Lover, the Beloved and the Love between them, into which we are called.
