The Parable of the Russian Bells - MP3

Price: Free downloadable audio file
Item Number: 224m
From the early years of the Soviet Union the revolutionaries found the village church bell to be both an annoyance and a hindrance to the grand project of collectivization. The sound of the bells disrupted propaganda speeches and generally set the tone for the routines of daily life. Gil Bailie tells the story of how the secular state, hostile to Christian faith, was able to turn the tolling of the bells into the blast of the factory whistle and in the process subvert the sacramental connections of the lives of a people.
