The journey into the Christian mystery is
never ending and in these presentations Gil Bailie explores, with the
help of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Holy Saturday theology, the question of
what happened between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The descent into
hell...Christ descends into the world of the unforgiven, the
unrepentant, the doomed, and to those who never heard or had the
opportunity of hearing about Christ. There is no place the saving power
and love of Christ does not penetrate. The question is, will we respond?
At the resurrection the power of death was broken – but not the fact
of death. Only by acknowledging that fact and accepting it as our
opportunity to enter into the paschal drama with Christ can we keep from
slipping back into the old religious swamp out of which we were dredged
at Easter. Post-christian culture, bereft of religious vigor, is
becoming such a swamp, a culture of death. Threatened from without by a
resurgence of pre-modern forms of sacred violence, it is inwardly
imperiled by post-modern forms of nihilistic resignation. Our world is
crying out for transcendence, for hope, and ultimately for the
resurrection which provides the true ground for them. Without the
resurrection we fall back into the pseudo-religion of the worship of
death as the only fact which ultimately cannot be denied or avoided.
