While fame is often associated with excellence in some endeavor, in the culture of fame there is also a negative element. While we know the name of Herostratus because he burned down the ancient Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, we do not know the names of the temple’s architects. In this 9th part of the Famished Craving series Gil Bailie looks at the role of models as either internal or external mediators in the modern crisis. Again using Jesus’ vine and branches discourse from the Gospels, Gil addresses the nature of hierarchy based on power versus that based on grace. The former produces a false transcendence in the old sacrificial and mythic order while the latter opens to the true transcendence oriented toward God. In this regard the traditions of Buddhism and Christianity are compared through then contemporary writings of the Dali Lama and Pope John Paul II. Both insist that there be an external source of authority, a hierarchy, in the disciple’s life, out of which the discovery of transcendence can grow.
