In this 6th part of the Famished Craving series
Gil Bailie asks the question, “What is Modernity?”.
It is well understood that
what came before is the ‘unenlightened’ dark age of myth and pre-scientific superstitious
religious belief. Yet concern for the downtrodden as well as the dignity of the
individual are both products of the Judeo-Christian hegemony of this early
period.
Lifting these concerns from their Christian seedbed and transplanting
them into the hothouse of the Enlightenment produced what we call ‘modernity’. Cut
off from their ontological sources in a relationship to the transcendent and
personal God they are transformed into Liberté, égalité, fraternité the motto of the
French Revolution and many others to follow with consequences both good and
ill.
Romano Guardini wrote in his mid-20th century book, The End of the Modern World, “As the
benefits of revelation disappear from the coming world, man will truly learn
what it means to be cut off from revelation.”
