Keeping Faith & Breaking Ground
"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." Luke 20:17
In this 5th part of the Famished Craving series Gil Bailie explores nihilism as a religious phenomenon; the religious experience of meaninglessness….the meaninglessness of my life as a numinous fact and I must witness to it.
On the one hand, in Western(ized) cultures the ongoing effects of the enlightenment is eroding Christian sacramental sensibilities and lifting higher the ideal of the ‘individual’ as the source of all meaning…resulting in post-modern nihilism beginning at the fringes of culture (e.g. sub-cultures).
And on the other hand, in cultures less influenced by Christianity (non-western), an attempt to bring back or revert to primitive sacrifice, ritual sacrifice, to resolve the crisis, again at the fringes…but working its way inward as the influence of the ‘West’ becomes more attenuated.
