In the third part of the Famished Craving series Gil Bailie follows the threads of modern fame back through the Greek world’s DOXA – ‘opinion’, to the ancient Hebrew’s religious experience of CHABAD - 'glory'. This glory has a sense of weight or substantiality – and so we return to the concept of ontological density.

The effect of the Gospel’s revelation of the innocence of the victim of sacred sacrificial violence weakens the forces that have provided social cohesion since the beginning of human cultures. Symptoms appear at first on the fringes of society. Sub-cultures appear for whom the mores and traditions of the old culture no longer hold. Attempts to invoke the old sacrificial mechanism for reconvening the culture only make the problem worse. This desacralization process can take either a crude secular form – which believes it can toss off scapegoating passions like an old coat – the false transcendence or, a Christian form in which sacrifice becomes self-sacrifice in imitation of the triune God of self-donating love.
