Keeping Faith & Breaking Ground
"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." Luke 20:17
In fragment 53 the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus states, “War is the father of all and the king of all…”
In John’s gospel (8:42ff) Jesus says to his listeners who claim descent from Abraham, “If God were your Father, you would love me....You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning….”
Beginning with these sources Gil Bailie continues his examination of fame showing anthropologically its dark and hidden relationship with violence. St. Augustine describes in book 6 of his Confessions the experience of his friend Alypius at the gladiatorial contests as an example of the mesmerizing power of crowds and violence. And in the gospel accounts of the crucifixion of Jesus that power is undermined as the crowds who gathered for the spectacle disperse “beating their breasts…” The breaking of the sacred structures of violence by the revelation of the cross has compromised the ability of human cultures to successfully renew themselves and left modern western societies increasingly at risk as they continue to move away from their Judeo-Christian roots.
