Keeping Faith & Breaking Ground
"The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." Luke 20:17
In part 13 - the final part of Famished Craving series, Gil Bailie uses the various meanings of the Latin word “liber” as a point of departure in an exploration of “book, liberation and Dionysus”. Beginning with the story of Paolo & Franchesca in Dante’s Inferno, Gil follows the thread of an unencumbered freedom which ends in slavery.
Legitimizing the freedom to ‘act’ is viewed in the example of the later Roman emperors Nero and Caligula whose only claim to imperial power was from genealogy. Seeking to find a means to support their authority the later Roman emperors only draw more bizarre attention to themselves in a bid for some kind of sacrality. From here the question is asked ‘What are the sources of law, authority and social norms?’ The work of twentieth century German political philosopher Carl Schmidt is used to provide some light on the sources of human social conventions showing that the normal arises in the first instance from the abnormal. The later Roman historian Suetonius’ suggestion that eros may be an alternative to war brings the discussion around again to Anais Nin and finally to St. Augustine.
This is the final part of the Famished Craving series. The entire 13 part series may be purchased either in MP3 format (downloadable individual files or on a data CD) or in a vinyl binder including all 13 audio CDs.
