In Vergil’s Aeneid ‘fama’ (the Latin means both rumor and fame) is described as

 “…swift of foot and fleet of wing, a monster awful and huge, who for the many feathers in her body has as many watchful eyes beneath – wondrous to tell – as many tongues, as many sounding mouths, as many pricked-up ears.” (Bk 4: lines 173ff)

In this image it is easy to see fame as the crowd – the mob, a monstrous figure. Fama creates the confusion and mystification which is the epistemological precondition of myth – the birth of myth.
