Beginning with the parable of the Prodigal Son Gil Bailie leads us on a journey into the person...starting with the question, "what does it mean to be a person?". Being moderns, we know all about personal autonomy and individualism. But with the help of Rene Girard's 'interdividual' psychological insights and the Church's theological understanding of mutual self-donation within the Trinity Mr. Bailie explores Jesus' saying in John 5:43, “I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.” Following the trail made by the Christians of the early centuries of the Church we find behind the person lies the mask of the greco-roman actor and the hypostatic union of the persons of the Trinity. It is a great mystery...for this is what the prodigal son wanted from his father...his substance, his being. In that story the prodigal son, received back into the father's loving embrace, experiences the personal freedom which comes not from autonomy but from the gratuitous love and forgiveness of his father and our Father. The notion of the theo-drama in the work of Hans Urs von Balthsasar offers each one who receives this grace a mission, a part to play in the drama and choreography of human redemption.

In the final session Gil comes to the source and summit of Christian life, the Eucharist. In scripture and Girard's anthropology we find connections from the mists of the past in the first human community into the end of time at the eschatological banquet in the Eucharistic meal. In the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, Jesus did not just disappear at the breaking of the bread, he remains with them, and us, in this very form and act of eating a crust of bread and drinking a sip of wine transformed into Jesus' body and blood. Eating is something every person of whatever station or place partakes in, no one is left out or uninvited. Everyone has the opportunity to take part in the drama of salvation.
